Do you need a phone number for ChatGPT?
It depends on what you are opening. At the time of writing, OpenAI phone verification help describes three cases:
- ChatGPT on the web or in the app: phone verification is not generally required to sign up or chat.
- Your first API key on platform.openai.com: a phone check is required once; later keys skip it.
- Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app: you may be asked to verify a number.
The code comes by SMS or, in some countries, WhatsApp. OpenAI does not send it by email or phone call, and an authenticator app does not replace this step.
What phone numbers does OpenAI accept?
OpenAI verifies mobile numbers over SMS. According to OpenAI supported number types, it does not accept landlines, VoIP, Google Voice or premium numbers. OpenAI also says one number can be used for phone verification up to 3 times, so a number that was used before may be refused.

When a temporary number makes sense, and when to use your own

- Your own SIM: not private / usually works / your plan cost / best for an account you keep, pay for and log in to for years.
- Google Voice or other VoIP: tied to another account / OpenAI says it does not support them / varies / not suitable for OpenAI.
- Free public numbers: not private (anyone can read the inbox) / rarely work / free / never for an account you care about.
