Google Voice Alternative for Verification Codes

By Alex Carter, Editor at GetVerifyCode

What is a good Google Voice alternative for verification codes? For a one-time sign-up code, a private temporary number usually fits better, because many apps refuse VoIP numbers like Google Voice. On GetVerifyCode you pick the service and country, the number appears right away, and unused credit returns if no SMS arrives in about 20 minutes.

Key facts

  • GetVerifyCode lists numbers in 194+ countries.
  • The live catalog covers 1,600+ services.
  • A temporary activation stays live for about 20 minutes.
  • If no SMS arrives before the timeout, the hold returns to your wallet.

Quick Answer

  • Google Voice is a calling and texting app, and some apps reject it for verification codes.
  • For a one-time code, a temporary number is the simplest alternative.
  • If the app may ask you to verify again, rent a number or use your own SIM.

Why do apps reject Google Voice numbers?

Many apps check whether a number belongs to a mobile carrier or a VoIP service before they send a code. VoIP numbers are cheap to create in bulk, so some apps block them to slow down abuse. OpenAI's help centre, for example, says landlines, VoIP and Google Voice numbers are not supported for its phone verification (OpenAI phone verification help). Other apps make their own choices, so a Google Voice number can work in one app and fail in the next. For more on how apps treat number types, see VoIP vs real-route SMS for OTP.

How do I get a Google Voice number, and what if I am outside the US?

Google's own setup guide says you sign in, search for a number by city or area code, and confirm a phone that can receive a text code (Google Voice setup help). It also says you can choose your own number if you are in the US, so personal accounts are built around US use. If you live elsewhere, or you have no US number to confirm with, Google Voice may not be an option at all.

Outside the US, a temporary number is the quicker route for a single code. You can pick a US number on the USA numbers page or choose another country, such as the UK numbers page. Our guide to a temporary US number for OTP covers the US case in more detail.

Option 1: GetVerifyCode temporary number

A temporary number is a private inbox for one verification code.

  • Pros: shown right after you confirm, works across 194+ countries and 1,600+ services, and unused credit returns to your wallet if no SMS arrives.
  • Cons: some apps reject virtual numbers, and the number is not yours to keep after the activation ends.
  • Best for: one-time sign-ups where you want to keep your personal number private.

Some apps reject virtual numbers. Acceptance is decided by the app, not by us.

Option 2: A rental number

Need the same number for days? Rentals keep one number for the rental period.

  • Pros: you can receive a second code later if the app asks you to verify again.
  • Cons: it costs more than a single activation, and it still ends when the rental period ends.
  • Best for: accounts you plan to use for a while, such as testing your own app.

Option 3: Google Voice

  • Pros: free for most calls and texts in the US, and you keep the number long term.
  • Cons: setup expects a US phone that can receive a code, and some apps reject it as VoIP.
  • Best for: everyday calling and texting in the US, not as a verification-only number.

Option 4: Free public SMS sites or your own SIM

Free sites show every message on a public page, so anyone can read your code. They suit only throwaway tests; see are free receive-SMS sites safe?. Your own SIM, or a second eSIM, is the most reliable choice for banking and accounts you need to recover later. Our TextNow alternative guide compares another popular app.

  2. Top up your wallet with a small amount.
  3. Search for the service you need, such as the Google verification page, WhatsApp or Telegram.
  4. Pick a country. For a US Google number, see Google verification with a US number.

If the code does not arrive, try the steps in didn't get the verification code? or pick another country.

Is it legal to use a Google Voice alternative?

Using a temporary number to protect your privacy, travel, or test your own app is generally lawful in many places, but laws differ by country and each app sets its own terms. Check both. Never use it for fraud, impersonation, or getting around a ban. Read more in are temporary phone numbers legal? and our acceptable use policy.
