A Shop verification code is a six-digit code from Shop, Shopify's shopping app and Shop Pay checkout, sent by SMS or email to confirm it's you. You usually get one when you pay with Shop Pay or sign in on a new device or browser. If you didn't ask for it, don't share it with anyone.

Key facts

  • A temporary activation on GetVerifyCode stays live for about 20 minutes, so it suits one-time codes.
  • If no SMS arrives before the timeout, the unused credit returns to your wallet.
  • GetVerifyCode lists numbers in 194+ countries, and the live catalog covers 1,600+ services.
  • The number is shown right after you confirm, and you can cancel early from the inbox.

Why did I get a Shop verification code?

The Shop Help Center lists three reasons you might receive a Shop Pay verification code, at the time of writing.

You're back on the device you opted in from

Shop may send a code the first time you use the same device you opted in on after setting up your account.

You're on a new device or browser

A new phone, laptop or browser isn't recognised yet, so Shop sends a code before it shows your saved details.

You chose Shop Pay at checkout

Selecting Shop Pay at a store's checkout sends a code to the mobile number linked to your account. You enter it in the checkout, then finish paying.

You may have a Shop account you forgot about

Shop Help explains that your Shop Pay account is linked to your phone number and email address. If you saved your details at a checkout that offers Shop Pay, that created an account, and because it happens during checkout it's easy to forget. That's why some people get codes, or find an account they don't remember. It can also happen that someone typed your number by mistake, in which case the code is useless to them unless it's shared.

What does a Shop verification code text look like?

According to Shop Help, the SMS says "XXXXXX is your Shop verification code", where XXXXXX is your six-digit code. At checkout you can also choose to verify by an email sent to the primary email you use for Shop Pay, and enter the six-digit code from that email instead. Be wary of any message that asks you to reply with the code, call a number or pass it on.

Texts from 22395: what users report

Many people report Shop texts arriving from the short code 22395. Shop's help page doesn't name a short code, so treat that as user-reported. Users also mention 22395 alongside other apps, so don't assume every 22395 text is from Shop; read the wording of the message instead. Short codes are 5- or 6-digit sender numbers that businesses use for automated texts, and our guide to 5-digit phone number short codes explains how these senders work.

Didn't request it? What to do

  1. Don't share the code. Don't read it to anyone who calls, texts or messages you about it, and don't type it into a site you didn't open yourself.
  2. Open the Shop app or your Shop Pay account directly, not through a link in a message, and check for orders or changes you don't recognise.
  3. If you never meant to have Shop Pay, opt out of Shop Pay or delete your Shop account, as Shop Help describes.
  4. If the codes keep coming and you have no account, someone may be entering your number by mistake. Ignore the codes and never share them.
  5. If a code you did request stopped working, see why a code shows as invalid or expired.

Shop code vs Shopify authentication code

Shop Help notes that if you also use two-step authentication with SMS for a Shopify admin account, you might receive codes from the same phone number. They are different codes:

  • Shop verification code: for shoppers using Shop and Shop Pay checkout; the text reads "XXXXXX is your Shop verification code"; six digits, by SMS or email.
  • Shopify authentication code: for signing in to a Shopify admin account with SMS two-step authentication; the text reads "Enter XXXXXX as your Shopify authentication code"; six digits.
  • Either code: never share it, and treat the Shopify wording with care if you never set up a Shopify admin account.

Is a Shop verification code text a scam?

The code itself is usually a real message from Shop, sent because a Shop Pay checkout or sign-in started with your number. The risk is sharing it. No real store, delivery driver or support agent needs you to read the code back, so if someone asks for it, stop. Other services send unexpected codes too; see why you got a Link verification code text and why you got a Google verification code. For the general picture, read what a verification code is and what OTP means.

Keep stray codes off your personal number

Stray codes are one reason people keep their personal number for shopping, banking and close contacts, and use a separate number for one-off sign-ups elsewhere. Read how to keep your personal number private for the full approach. For Shop Pay itself, use your own number, because the account is linked to it and you'll need it again at future checkouts.

Top up your wallet from $1. Each number is priced live per service and country. Some apps reject virtual numbers. Acceptance is decided by the app, not by us.

Using a temporary number to protect your privacy, travel, or test your own app is generally lawful in many places, but laws differ by country and each app sets its own terms. Check both. Never use it for fraud, impersonation, or getting around a ban. See are temporary phone numbers legal.
