Yes, you need a phone number for Telegram. Every new account is tied to a number that receives a login code by SMS or in the app. You don't have to use a SIM card: Telegram also accepts anonymous numbers from Fragment, and a temporary number can receive the sign-up code if you want to keep your personal mobile private.
Key facts
- GetVerifyCode lists numbers in 194+ countries.
- The live catalog covers 1,600+ services.
- A temporary activation stays live for about 20 minutes.
- If no SMS arrives before the timeout, the hold returns to your wallet.
Quick Answer
- Telegram requires a phone number to create an account and to log in on a new device.
- Telegram says you can sign up without a SIM card by using an anonymous number from Fragment.
- Other people only see your number if your privacy settings allow it, and you can chat by username instead.

- Some apps reject virtual numbers. Acceptance is decided by the app, not by us. Updated October 22, 2026.
Why does Telegram ask for a phone number?
Telegram uses your number as the account ID. The first login code goes to that number, and Telegram may ask for a code again when you log in on a new device. Tying each account to a number also makes spam accounts harder to create in bulk.
Your number is not public by default. In the Telegram FAQ, Telegram explains that you control who can see your number and who can find you by it, and that people can contact you through your username without knowing your number.
Can you use Telegram without a phone number?
Not without any number, but you can do it without a SIM. Telegram's own announcement says you can have an account without a SIM card and log in using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on the Fragment platform (Telegram blog). At the time of writing, Fragment's number page lists these numbers for resale, so check availability and cost before you plan around one.
How the main options compare for Telegram sign-up:
- Your own SIM: not private / works / your plan cost / best for your main, long-term account
- Fragment anonymous number: private / made for Telegram / bought on Fragment / best if you want a permanent number with no SIM
- GetVerifyCode temporary number: private / works for many apps, each app decides / live price per service and country / best for a one-time sign-up code
- Free public SMS sites: not private (public inbox) / rarely work / free / low-stakes tests only, never an account you care about
When a temporary number makes sense, and when to use your own
A temporary number makes sense when you want a separate account for a community or project, you're traveling and can't receive SMS on your home SIM, or you test a Telegram bot or app and need a clean account. Use your own number, a rental, or a Fragment number for any account you plan to keep, because you may need the same number again to log in on a new device. If you keep the account, turn on a cloud password (two-step verification) in Telegram's privacy settings right after signing up.

Is it legal to use a temporary number for Telegram?
Using a temporary number to protect your privacy, travel, or test your own app is generally lawful in many places, but laws differ by country and each app sets its own terms. Check both. Never use it for fraud, impersonation, or getting around a ban. Our guide on whether temporary phone numbers are legal covers the details.
